Fight For Your Rights As An Employee

Estimated reading time: 2 mins

It’s important that you don’t let people take advantage of you in the world of business and your career. You should make sure that when you are in the office, you are treated with respect and that your rights are upheld. However, to do this, you need to know what your rights are and that’s not always easy. In fact, workers often just aren’t aware of their rights, and this opens up the possibility of them being taken advantage of which can actually lead to dangerous and rather unpleasant situations. So what are your rights?

The Right To Zero Discrimination

It doesn’t matter what race you are, what sex you are, what your religious beliefs are or what your birth certificate says. You should expect to be treated the same as anyone else in the office. There should be no special treatment, and there shouldn’t be any discrimination either. If you think you are being held back from a promotion for something other than your quality of work, it’s important to know that this is unfair behaviour and you can fight it. Discrimination and prejudice can be more subtle than you think in an office. You might find, for instance, that the guys get the best projects because they attend guys night out and associate more with the boss. This still isn’t acceptable and how you choose to spend your time outside of work hours shouldn’t be held against you.

The Right To Work

In a perfect world, if you do your best and achieve a fantastic quality of work, you would never be let go. In a perfect world, people who completely fantastic work for their bosses would never be made redundant. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world, and people may be fired for a variety of reasons. You could be let go if you are causing issues for your employee. Or, you could be made redundant simply so the office can save money. While this isn’t right or fair, it does happen, more frequently than many are willing to admit. In situations like this, it’s important to realise that you have a right a severance package. The business should support you and ensure your wellbeing is protected. According to Buss Murton Law and other firms, an employment lawyer can help you in a situation like this. They may not be able to save your job, but they can get you the money you deserve.

The Right To Feel Safe

Safe from harassment, safe from injury, safe from emotional stress and any other issue that might plague your work or office. If you ever feel like your health is in jeopardy at work, don’t remain silent. You have the right to feel completely secure where you work and if you don’t, there are options. Your first step should always be to speak to someone in management. You must make sure that you make a formal query about whatever issue is affecting you. This means that there is a record and if you decide to leave if the issue is not resolved, you can use that record as evidence.

These are just some of the rights you have working in a business, and they should not be taken lightly. By knowing your rights, you can protect them if your boss or anyone in your work calls them into question.
