The Amazing Health Benefits of Porridge (Oatmeal)

Estimated reading time: 3 mins

I love porridge, or oatmeal as it is sometimes known. It is one of my favorite breakfast choices and I always make sure to include it in my weekly diet. That’s because porridge has amazing health benefits that can help you look and feel your best. In this article, I will explore the various ways that porridge can keep you physically healthy, and supports your mental wellbeing, and why it should be part of your daily routine.

Porridge is a traditional Scottish dish made from oats cooked in either water or milk. It is incredibly nutritious, with a variety of vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health. Some manufacturers also fortify their oats with vitamin B12. Porridge also contains fiber, which helps to regulate digestion and keep our hearts healthy. Moreover, the high levels of protein in porridge mean that it keeps us feeling fuller for longer and prevents us from snacking on unhealthy foods throughout the day.

One of the main benefits of eating porridge on a regular basis is its effect on cholesterol levels. Studies have shown that those who eat porridge three times a week have significantly lower cholesterol than those who don’t eat any at all. This means that if you want to avoid developing cardiovascular disease or stroke later in life, then adding some porridge into your diet could be a great way to do so.

The antioxidants found in oats also provide numerous health benefits to those who consume them regularly. Antioxidants are powerful compounds that help to protect our cells against damage caused by free radicals – molecules which can cause serious damage over time if they are not neutralized by these compounds. By including some oats into your diet on a regular basis, you can ensure that your cells remain healthy and well protected against any potential damage down the line.

Eating porridge can also help improve mood regulation due to its high content of tryptophan; an amino acid which helps produce serotonin – ‘the feel good hormone’ as it has been dubbed by experts! Eating breakfast containing oats each morning can therefore give you an energy boost for cardio exercise, due to their slow release properties, helping keep away feelings of fatigue during the day, whilst also promoting calmness and relaxation at night time when we need them most!

Furthermore, for those looking for something gluten-free, oats are a great option as they contain no gluten whatsoever! Oats are also low GI (Glycaemic Index) meaning they break down slowly in our bodies ensuring sustained energy release throughout the day rather than sudden peaks and troughs like other carbohydrates such as white bread or pasta may cause when consumed too often.

Finally – Porridge is incredibly versatile too; there are endless ways to add flavour such as banana slices, honey or nut butter making this breakfast bowl truly delicious whatever way you choose. The way I take it is made with milk, a scoop of cookies & cream protein powder, a small spoonful of peanut butter powder and a tablespoon of organic flaxseed – which comes together to be a delicious protein and fiber powerhouse!

All things considered – Porridge really is one of the most nutritious and beneficial breakfast options out there; providing us with essential vitamins & minerals whilst keeping us full throughout the day plus much more besides! So why not give this traditional British dish another chance today?
