Home Ergonomics – How to save your posture in the work from home era

Estimated reading time: 2 mins

It’s safe to say that the recent conditions across the globe have changed the way businesses and individuals operate on a day-to-day basis.

People have left office luxuries like tablet holders and standing desks behind for the safety of their home offices – some of which, sadly, simply aren’t upto the task of supporting their body or posture.

Despite working from home being a pleasant change (for some individuals), protecting our health should still be one of the main areas we focus on during this worrying time – with posture ranking highly on the list of critical concerns.

If your office isn’t equipped with the correct tools for the job, you’ll start to see a rapid decline in your posture – something no individual wants to experience.

So, what can you do to make work at home a little less strenuous on your body? We try to answer that question with quality advice that’ll make your posture thank you when this is all over.

So, with that in mind, let’s waste no further time and get straight into it!

Setting Up Your Office Correctly

There is plenty of advice out there on how to correctly sit and position yourself during work hours. However, we like to start from the basics – the actual setting up of your office.

Below, we’ve listed some of the most important factors to consider when setting up your office for healthy back posture.

  • Invest/or ask your office to purchase you a proper chair that promotes healthy back posture
  • Set your screen to the correct height – you shouldn’t be looking down at your monitor or laptop all the time
  • Take regular breaks to stretch and relax your posture
  • Try making your own laptop stand – simply prop it up and ensure it’s at eye level, not torso level
  • Try not to work from your sofa – this is the worst place to sit for back posture
  • Purchase a keyboard and mouse – this will naturally allow your body to open up and feel more free
  • Laptop users should alternate between sitting and standing whenever possible – a great way to promote healthy posture

Can Tech Help Our Posture

As you can see from the advice above, the technology itself plays a major role in the health of our posture.

Take retail work for example, many businesses now utilise Ipad holders to lessen the strain on their employees’ backs. Other companies opt for standing desks, invest in proper office chairs, and adopt other forms of tech to aid in posture health.

Companies like Olive Tablet are even dedicated to providing tablet mounts and stands for the safety-conscious workplaces in the modern era (a number which, thankfully, continues to grow).

Ultimately, keeping our back posture healthy is one of the main things we should concern ourselves with when working from home. Whilst this won’t last forever, the results of poor back health may lead to other complications in unlucky circumstances.

Just remember, no employer wants to put their workers’ health at risk. Let them know your issues and you’ll most likely be able to come to a fair and agreeable solution.
