What’s the Difference Between a Resume and a CV?

Estimated reading time: 2 mins

One in five recruiters will reject a resume before they even finishing reading it. Having an excellent resume is critically important in finding a job.

But there is often some confusion between a CV and a resume. Both are very different when you apply for jobs. Mixing them up and sending a resume when a potential employer asks for a CV, could be detrimental to you getting the job.

So, what is the difference between a resume and a CV? Is a business CV different than a normal CV?

There’s quite a bit of difference between them. Here’s everything you need to know.

What’s the Difference Between a Resume and a CV?

A CV is a curriculum vitae, which is typically much longer than a resume.

A curriculum vitae is typically for applying for international or scientific positions. They are also designed for academic and research positions.

If you are applying for a teaching position at a community college or at a university, a curriculum vitae will typically be used.

A curriculum vitae is also much more detailed than a resume. It goes beyond your education and your work history. You also detail awards, special honors, grants, academic work and research, and publications.

A CV may also have professional references, relevant coursework, dissertation or thesis, hobbies, as well as your positive skills and attributes.

This is the main difference between a resume and a CV.

When it comes to creating a resume, it’s important to know how long it should be and what you should include. A resume is often very concise and used for most jobs. You want to include relevant work experience in your resume that’s relevant to the job requirements of the job you are applying for.

In addition, a resume is really important if you want to grab the attention of the HR manager or recruiter. You want your resume to pop out and stand out.

A resume should include your name and a short summary of your skills. You should also work experience and education. You can also briefly include awards you have garnered.

You can also show licenses or certificates you have.

A resume is typically about one-page if you have less than ten years of work experience. If you have more than ten years of experience, your resume should be about two pages. You can make it three pages if you have managerial or CEO experience.

Why Does It Matter?

It’s critically important to know the difference between a resume and a CV. If you mistake it on a job application, it can significantly decrease your chances of getting a job.

Remember, recruiters quickly go through a resume and a CV. Not having the right one could mean they easily toss your application because you didn’t follow instructions.
