I don’t want to stay in the same draftsman job for over 30 years, like my Dad. Nor does he have any desire to write a blog, manage projects, innovate, etc. But we do have one thing in common – we both have the same underlying skills to master to fulfill our potential. And heck, right now, we need to wire ourselves up to reach potential, don’t we?
Happiness potential. Earning potential. Learning potential. Everything potential.
Or No Potential. You decide!
We all want different things from life. I might want to make lots of friends – you might want to achieve superstar status. The diversity of our dreams makes the world an interesting place! The big question is: Do we all get there differently, or is there a common approach to achieving all our life goals, no matter what they are?
The answer is that my research tells me that there are five personal outcomes that we must realize to fully exploit our potential.
These 5 outcomes form a rock-solid platform so that all other personal goals can be achieved, whether it be to learn Spanish, or become a kick-ass Python developer. They are the fundamentals of personal mastery.
Before you consider taking that Linux Administrator exam, or a crash course on Ruby On Rails, think about arming yourself with 5 skills that will propel your capabilities.
- Developing the ‘right attitude’ and making it work for you
- Harnessing the Power of Positive Thinking
- Thinking as an Innovator
- Adopting Creative Thinking
- Mastering the Art of Solving Problems
Let me explain each one in more detail…
1.Developing the ‘right attitude’ and making it work for you
In every aspect of your life, you attitude plays a big role. If you want to get ahead and be content in your life, then you have to make your attitude your ally. In order to make your attitude your ally, you have to learn what that means. As you will learn your attitude can paint your whole life and you can change everything about your current situation.
2. Harnessing the Power of Positive Thinking
Most people easily accept that when you give off positive energy, you can infect others with that positive energy and that they will return that energy to you. Positive influences are all around us. They exist because people love to feel good. People prefer the positive to the negative. You can likely relate to this. You would probably rather be around someone who is upbeat and full of energy than someone who is depressed and moping around. People see that thinking positive and having a positive attitude can play a large role in their life. Positive thinking can be very powerful and by putting it to work in your life; you can reap the positive benefits.
3. Thinking as an Innovator
Innovative thinking is thinking that goes beyond what you can see. It is imaginative. It is the ability to look beyond the obvious. It is creative and it is different. An innovative thinker can look at something ordinary and see the extraordinary. Learn how to innovate – and you’ll be able to invent quality ideas and concepts faster than your peers.
4. Adopting Creative Thinking
Creative thinking is something you can train your mind to do. Some people are actually born with creative thinking abilities, while others have to really work to let themselves be a creative thinker. However, it is possible for anyone to become a great creative thinker whether they were naturally born or they have to work at it. You hold the key to adopting creative thinking in your life and by doing so; you could change your life, your thoughts and your world, forever.
5. Mastering the Art of Solving Problems
You likely use problem solving everyday. It is often taken for granted. People do not realize just how wonderful and important problem solving is. You can begin to use problem solving to its full potential and really respect that problem solving is important. You just need to learn more about problem solving as a skill and an artform. It can be learned – and you have the power to learn it.
By focusing on achieving these outcomes, we build a strong platform of fundamental capabilities. This is the essence of personal mastery.
