How to Set Up a Home Office Space

Estimated reading time: 3 mins

Lately, more and more businesses allow their employees to work from home. This is particularly the case ever since last year where so many of us had no other choice. Now, working from home does sound quite appealing, especially to those that were never in an opportunity to try it out.

While working from home does bring some benefits, many find the lack of structure quite difficult and counter-productive. This is mostly the case since many people who recently started working from home actually lack the environment that will allow them to focus on the job at hand.

That being said, here are some tips on how to set up a home office space that will both motivate you and increase your productivity in the workplace.

Choose the right space

The first thing you need to be careful with when setting up your home office is choosing the place where you want to set it up. Even though your dining room table or your living room sofa may seem like good choices – trust me, they’re not. Instead, look for an area where there’s not a lot of traffic during the day. Additionally, make sure that the space is bright – but not too much – as poorly-lit environments will decrease your productivity and make you feel more tired and sleepy instead.

Decorate the area

Once you know WHERE you’ll set up your office, you need to talk about how it will look like. Consider the colors you wish to implement into the design. Additionally, choose office furniture that will be useful to you. Moreover, feel free to add some interesting details into your design as well, to make the space feel more comfortable and “you”. You can browse various unique décor pieces on this great site that I found and draw inspiration from there.

Invest in comfortable office furniture

Next, the number one “killer” of productivity is definitely uncomfortable furniture. While you were previously sitting at your home computer, chances are you weren’t spending as much time doing so as you will be when working from home. That’s why you need to invest in quality home office furniture that will not only be comfortable but supportive as well. Luckily, nowadays, you can easily find pieces that both look and feel good carefully designed by OFM Furniture or others, and that will easily fit into your home office design.

Go for a second monitor

If you’re working from home, you’re probably doing some type of computer work. If that’s the case, having to switch tabs and windows can feel quite frustrating and can easily decrease your productivity. So, in order to prevent this from happening, you should invest in an additional monitor. No matter what you’ll use it for or what type of work you’re doing, such an investment will pay off as soon as you realize just how convenient it actually is. This way, you can have all the important information you need frequently pulled up on one monitor and use the other screen to do research and other business-related things.

Make the space more lively

In the end, you want to ensure that your working environment feels pleasant to spend time in. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is by adding some greenery to your space. By adding just a few house, or rather office plants to your home office, you’ll create a much calmer working environment. Of course, if you feel like you’re not too good with plants or you feel like trying to keep a real plant alive will only stress you out additionally, you can always go with faux plants instead.

Once you start working from a proper work environment – even though it’s situated in your home – you’ll notice great improvements in both your motivation and efficiency. So, don’t put this off another day, but start setting up your home office as soon as possible.
