Organizational Hacks for When You Have a Lot on Your Plate

Estimated reading time: 3 mins

There is nothing worse than feeling like you are buried in mounds of work and struggling to deal with it all on time. It can become burdensome and anxiety inducing, making you feel demotivated.

The key to get through it is to take a deep breath and follow these tips for organizing yourself so that you can work on your tasks one step at a time.

Set Realistic Deadlines and Record Them in a Calendar

It is key to set deadlines when you have a lot to do, and it is even better if you write them down in a calendar to ensure that you do not forget what you need to do and when. It is easy to forget about tasks when there are a lot of them, but if you have a calendar set up with reminders, then this will make the whole process feel a lot more achievable.

It is advised to always have a backup calendar just in case, which can be easily done through exporting your Google calendar to Excel.

Keep Your Workspace Tidy

Having tidy surroundings helps keep your mind feel decluttered and can dramatically reduce your stress levels. Make sure everything on your desk (or wherever you may be working) has a home, so that you can identify where to put things back when you have used them. This will avoid you losing important things and will therefore give you one less thing to worry about. It is also a good idea to have a thorough clear out of all unwanted items before you get started on each of your tasks.

Make an Order of Priority and Plan Your Schedule Around It

When you have a lot of different tasks to get through, the best way to begin this is by writing all of them down and ranking them from most important and immediately due, to the least important. Then, start to complete the tasks in order of priority – once you complete the most important tasks, you will already feel much more relaxed and motivated to carry on with the other tasks.

Unfortunately, when you have a lot to do, you may have to organize your schedule around this and miss out on doing some of the fun things until your tasks are completed. The light at the end of the tunnel will keep you wanting to carry on!

Go to Bed Early and Wake Up Early

In order to keep up with your workload and not feel stressed, one of the best things you can do is to go to sleep relatively early and wake up early. When having a lot of things to do, it is often tempting to stay up until the early hours of the morning to complete it all. Unless your deadline is very imminent, it is best to stop at a reasonable time in the evening and be in bed with enough time to ensure you have eight hours of sleep. This way, you can wake up early in the morning when your brain will have had time to rest and can work in a fully functioning way, which will have a positive outcome on your deadlines. If you manage your full schedule in the wrong way, this can potentially lead to more stress, so the best thing to do is to remain calm and not over work yourself. The feeling of relief when you have finally got through the tasks will be all worth it – just make sure to treat yourself as a reward!
