Fear of Failure: What Entrepreneurs Need to Understand and Conquer

Estimated reading time: 3 mins

Starting a business is always a risky decision. You’ll never know how it’s going to work out in the beginning or if it’s going to succeed at all.

It’s easy to tell people to have the courage to pursue their dreams. But passion isn’t enough to make a business thrive. You need to learn how to choose your battles and when to take risks.

Setbacks are a part of life. Even the most successful people have encountered significant delays at some point in their lives. As a budding entrepreneur, how do you run a startup business amid all the fears that you hold?

The fear of failure

Several studies show that many startups fail in the first few years of their operations. That’s why it’s entirely understandable for entrepreneurs and business owners to develop a fear of failure.

Letting other people know that your business venture has failed can make you feel even worse. You may feel as if all your efforts weren’t enough and that the mistakes could have been prevented if only you put more effort into it. But worrying about these things and blaming yourself could only lead to further negative thinking. Thus, affecting any potential for improvement and learning from your mistakes.

Whatever happens, it’s vital not to let your doubts and fears rule over you and your decisions. Also, never let them get in the way of your rest and sleep. While it’s understandable that you need to focus on a lot of things before the end of the day, it’s crucial that you give yourself time to recover.

Understanding the financial risk

Understanding the financial risks that you’re about to take is a huge task. Failure to do so often leads to stress and even anxiety. If you’re planning to start a catering service company, for instance, you need to think about the costs of getting food service equipment in the Philippines to be able to run your business. This often leaves business owners with feelings of anxiety, which makes it difficult for them to function normally.

Similar to the effects of stress, anxiety can progress into a negative behavior pattern. Soon, it will become a burden to the owner, which can take a toll on their mental and emotional health. It can make them feel tired and drained of all the energy to manage the business.

It’s okay to wallow

If you ever feel like it’s becoming overwhelming, then allow yourself to feel it when you need to release it. Feeling disappointed is only natural, and it won’t just go away. Let yourself wallow but after a few days, try to move on.

The first thing you need to do is be honest with yourself. Think about all the things that went wrong and why they happened. Remember that it’s not too late. It’s only a little roadblock that can help you understand things better.

Find things that make you happy. Start from the beginning, and be thankful for your blessings. Failure is nothing but a part of life. Remember to remind yourself of all your triumphs, and treat everything as a challenge. Lastly, don’t be afraid to try again. Your self-assurance will inspire confidence in others.
